Gulf of Georgia Cannery 4-7

November 24, 2021 @ 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm

 Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society

“Salmon People”

Grades 4 – 7

Wednesday November 24, 2021

Registration deadline Oct. 29

We have arranged a field trip for students in Grades 4 – 7 to the Gulf of Georgia Canning Society for the program “Salmon People” on Wednesday November 24, 2021 from 12-1:30pm. Please meet in the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society parking lot at 11:45am. The Cannery Society is located at 12138 Fourth Ave in Richmond. The building sits over the Fraser River on wooden pilings which are treated with a wood preservative which can exude a strong odour. Anyone with respiratory problems should note this smell could cause them slight irritation. It is not, however, a health hazard. The building is seafood allergy safe. Participants will not come into contact with any seafood product, as the facility last processed fish in 1979.

Field Trip Description: Indigenous people have fished along the banks of the Fraser River since time immemorial. Using object-based inquiry, students will investigate replica fishing tools and discuss fishing techniques. This program surveys how First Nations’ skills and expertise contributed to the West Coast fishing industry.

This trip is “rain or shine”, please dress for the weather! The building can be cold so dress warm!
