“Fishy Business”

We have arranged a field trip for students in Grades K – 3 to the Gulf of Georgia Canning Society for the program “Fishy Business” on Wednesday November 24, 2021 from 10-11:30am. Please meet in the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society parking lot at 9:45am. The Cannery Society is located at 12138 Fourth Ave in Richmond. The building sits over the Fraser River on wooden pilings which are treated with a wood preservative which can exude a strong odour. Anyone with respiratory problems should note this smell could cause them slight irritation. It is not, however, a health hazard. The building is seafood allergy safe. Participants will not come into contact with any seafood product, as the facility last processed fish in 1979. 

 Field Trip Description: Explore the relationship between people and the environment through the investigation of the West Coast fishing industry. Students compare past and present fishing methods and discuss the economic and cultural importance of fishing to coastal communities. An interactive fishing activity inspires students to consider how human activity contributes to the sustainability of our oceans while they discover different fish species. 

This trip is “rain or shine”, please dress for the weather! The building can be cold so dress warm!
